Camel Safari Tour Egypt

A Camel Safari in Egypt, often the second thing you think of after the Cairo Pyramids. Contrary to popular belief Camels are not indigenous to Egypt. Ask any Australian and they will tell you stories of wild camels in the out back and how there are seen as pests. There are over 1 million wild camels in Australia now and they are growing in numbers by 10% a year; but there not from Australia either, they were brought in the 1800 to carry goods across the desert and when the petrol engine arrived were left to fend for themselves. Camels evolved in North America, 4 million years ago they migrated across the Bering land bridge into Asia where they were domesticated and slowly brought across to the middle east.

In Egypt they are far to valuable to be left to fend for themselves and any 'wild camels' you see as you drive through the desert are actually part of a heard. Look hard enough you will find a group of small boys playing near by or an old man sitting quietly returning your stare as you pass by.

In the past Bedouin nomads would arrive in Siwa each year around november, december, after harvest time and buy up the olives and dates and travel through three smaller oasis above Siwa and to the left to get to Jaghbub in Libya. It took four days to arrive in Jaghbub . The camel caravans would then travel up to the Mediterranean and on to either Alexandria or Tripoli or finish there where the olives would travel to Italy by boat.

That was then. After the troubles with Libya in the 70's the border was closed from Siwa to Jaghbub. The road came to Siwa in 1989 to help keep Siwa away from its Berber roots in Libya and the caravan route become one for smugglers and the odd donkey trip to visit family in Libya. Camels until recently only came to Siwa as food. You can tell if the meat is camel, as the head sits in the butchers shops staring back at you. A few years ago camels were introduced once again to Siwa and it is now possible to follow in the foot steps of the old bedouin camel routes through the oasis towards Libya. We can organise a full desert trek out into the great sand sea for 10, 20 days or arrange an afternoon camel ride out on the edges of the Sahara. Longer safari's need more time to prepare for and at least one month to get copies of your passports so we can obtain desert permits from Cairo before you arrive.

I will be adding some pictures of the camel safari's here shortly.
