There are many interesting places to visit within an hours drive of Breb. If you have a hire car, you can go out for the day and experience Maramures in many way and be back for dinner and your glass of suica well before sunset.

Sighetu Marmatiei - pronounced 'Siget' is a border town. If your planning on visiting the Ukraine, Sighetu is a great place to cross the border. You can do the whole trip in a day from Breb. Theirs not too much to see on the other side of the border crossing but if your kids want to a stamp in their passport and Dad wants to but some vodka that no one at home even knew existed, then this is well worth a trip on your day out to Sighetu. The border is 10 minutes from the centre and a short walk around a wooden bridge. You walk out of Europe and walk into the former USSR. Sapanta - The Merry Church - The church in Sapanta is known as the Merry Church. When you visit you will see why. The village is 17 kms from Sighetu and on the Ukraine border. All the fuss is about one man and what he did. In 1935 Ioan Stan Patras started to carve wooded crosses for people who died in abnormal ways. You will see 17 crosses with paintings of people being hit by cars, the man who was shot by a Hungarian, the boy who was eaten by wolves. It's all hear and documented in rhymes in a book in English you need to carry around with you when you visit. There are some good souvenir shops in Sapanta. We try and encourage people to buy any souvenir they want in Breb, but it is often easer to buy them here as there are fixed prices and lower quality and so cheaper. When we take our guest here we also visit a local Monastery that is currently under construction so great for kids who want to run around and play hide and seek. According to Lonely Planets the wooden church is 75 meters high and tallest wooden structure in Europe.

Viseu de Sus - We have yet to do this day trip. This is the steam train that Michael Palin made famous on his trip through Eastern Europe. There is a narrow gauge railway here that goes straight up the mountain and is great for kids and railway buffs. Once at the top you have the day to walk around heading back down the mountain in the late afternoon. We can take you here and will enjoy getting some great video of the steam engine and the small carriages.

Cavnic - Cavnic is one of two ski resorts in Maramures. In the summer there are day camps for children who want to learn to ski on the dry slope and even tennis lesson mixed in with an hour on the big bouncy castle. From December to April is a sky resort and covered in the Maramures section.

Baia Mare - Famous for being a mining town and extracting gold from the Maramures mountains. That was then. Baia Mare is Romania's 4th largest city and, it's not the best, but that's what makes it interesting, your the only foreigner in town. You don't see tourist here. There is the city park, there is a theatre, the old houses museum, (there are many of these in Romania, another Ceausescu thing).

There are good train connections from Baia Mare to Cluj, and Bucharest and buses and trains to Budapest.

Sarbi - Is a village you can walk to within an hour of Breb. It has two water 'laundrettes' and one contraption that pumps water through wooden piston to clean the wool. It's still in use so when you are here we can pop by and see when they will be cleaning the wool and come along to see it all in action. They also have a good selection of rugs for sale here. We know several families in Sarbi as we bought most of our houses that are now in Breb from this village. So when we walk through the village be prepared to stop for a sucia and a chat about the price of houses and the heat that is drying out the hay too much.
